Make sure to join the next BK DD Council general monthly meeting on October 23rd, 2023 for a special presentation by Kelly Weiss from the NYS Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence.

The presentation will focus on the collaboration project between NYS Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and NYS Council on Developmental Disabilities (formerly known as the Developmental Disabilities Planning Council). NYS Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence is partnering with the Council on Developmental Disabilities to increase services for people with developmental disabilities who have experienced domestic and/or sexual violence. 

Goals of the Project:

  • Develop trainings and resources for developmental disability providers
    • How to respond to someone who has been a victim of violence
    • Community services that are available for survivors
    • Risk assessment and referral processes
  • Develop trainings and resources for domestic violence providers and rape crisis programs
    • Developmental disabilities, rooted in the social model of disability
    • Reasonable accommodations
    • Process for determining capacity to consent to sexual activity
    • Adaptations that will increase accessibility to services for survivors with developmental disabilities
  • Build connections between systems, such as, developmental disability providers and domestic violence/rape crisis program providers
  • Equip disability providers to offer sexuality education and violence prevention programming for people receiving services
  • Identify long-term, sustainable solutions
