  • “…The consequences of this discrimination can be catastrophic, as we saw all too clearly — and often — during the COVID-19 pandemic. When ventilators were in short supply, people with disabilities often were placed at the end of the line, told their lives were worth less than non-disabled people. They were denied access to the people who provide the support they need to make decisions about treatment. And because they could not access the services and supports they needed to stay in the community, many had no choice but to live in nursing homes and other congregate settings where COVID-19 was rampant. Thousands of disabled people died as a result.”

  • The Work Without Worry Act, introduced by Senators Ron Wyden and Bill Cassidy and endorsed by ANCOR, aims to support Americans with disabilities in pursuing employment without the fear of losing their Social Security benefits. Currently, individuals with severe medical conditions that began before age 22 can receive Disabled Adult Child (DAC) benefits based on their parents’ Social Security earnings. However, many fear that working could jeopardize these benefits. This legislation ensures that any earnings from work, regardless of the amount, will not impact their eligibility for DAC benefits. It’s a bipartisan effort that’s expected to benefit around 6,000 individuals with disabilities over the next decade without significantly affecting the Social Security Trust Funds. Several other Senators have also co-sponsored this bill.

  • OPWDD is partnering with the American Institutes for Research®  (AIR) to evaluate the effectiveness of Care Coordination practices. AIR was chosen through a competitive procurement process based on the strength of their application and their extensive experience conducting similar program evaluations for other state and federal entities, organizations, and agencies.

The evaluation will include a review of current procedures, identification of opportunities to streamline processes, research on promising practices, and submission of recommendations to improve the quality of care-managers and the care management model. It will also include opportunities for stakeholders to share their experiences and stories engaging CCO’s.

More information on the progress of the evaluation and opportunities to engage will be shared throughout the duration of the project as part of our ongoing strategic plan updates. In the meantime, if you would like to provide feedback, you can email ARPA.Inquiry@opwdd.ny.gov.
